North Portal sits right on the Canada–United States border in southeastern Saskatchewan, directly across from Portal, North Dakota. It became an incorporated village on November 16, 1903, and it lies within the Rural Municipality of Coalfields No. 4.
Its location has shaped what the village is known for. The border crossing here is considered the major entry point to and from the U.S. within Saskatchewan, linking Saskatchewan Highway 39 with US Route 52.
Visitors may also know North Portal for the Gateway Cities Golf Club, next to the village. Eight of its nine holes are in Canada, but the ninth hole and the clubhouse are in the United States.
